California Academy of Sciences: Lions, tiger sharks and spiders (oh my!)

It took three years and a half-billion dollars, but the daily crowds that have filled the rebuilt California Academy of Sciences since it reopened in fall 2008 suggest it was worth it. Sure, they come to admire the stunning architecture by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano, and the innovative, visually appealing and often interactive exhibits. But most of all--among the kids at least--they come to see live creatures big and small.

About San Jose, California

Brain power is applied very well in San Jose. It’s the town that produces more patents than any other town in the U. S. In 1777, San Jose was the first town in Nueva California. It’s certainly been there long enough now to grow roots. But, what about today? It’s the poster city for Silicon Valley, hence, the patents. It does take brain power to recognize the problem of light pollution from cities, for example, and do something about it. San Jose, they say, replaced all its outdoor lamps with low-pressure sodium ones. Now, in honor of that effort, San Jose has an asteroid named after it, asteroid 6216 San Jose. (I wonder if that’s the mayor’s street address. Har, har.) San Jose has beautiful weather like San Francisco, which makes it easy for workers to get to their tech-bubble jobs every morning. Soccer and hockey are big here for people to enjoy when they relax. Finally, in 2004, the San Jose City Library system (and University Library) as a unit was named by Library Journal as Library of the Year. Brain power, I tell you, is key here.

Cliff House: A cliffhanger with a delicious ending

Most San Francisco visitors spend their time downtown or along the bay with its piers and restaurants. Few make it out to the ocean, where there's a landmark restaurant at the northwestern tip of the city poised majestically atop an ocean cliff. The view is unmatched, and unlike many "view" restaurants, the food is excellent, too.
